An Unexpected Adventure

Today we went into Kampala for the first time. It is not a city in the way we would imagine it. There are no tall buildings and there are many, many dirt roads. We went to meet with our lawyer and have a briefing for our court appearance (which has been moved to Dec 10th..so please pray as you go to sleep Tuesday, we will be waking up and headed to court). It was wonderful to finally meet our lawyer who has been working hard on both Simon and Isaac's file. We learned that Isaac's birthday is February 10, 2012. This new fact brought tears to my eyes. We haven't missed another birthday! We can celebrate (hopefully with our family!).

After court we ran errands in town. While we were in a store purchasing a fan (hopefully to help us sleep...another prayer request. Falling asleep is fine, staying asleep is the issue) Raymond, our driver, received a phone call. There was an abandoned baby just one month old who was very hungry and waiting at a police station about a half hour away from us.

Cara and I quickly turned in to Mommies and we ran to the baby aisle to purchase a bottle and milk (Cara also wanted to get toys and snacks). We purchased our items and headed to the police station, which was a small trailer with broken windows and a long line of people. There we learned the story of a sweet baby girl named, Rahuma, and she was placed in my arms. Cara and I snuggled this tiny, tiny life as we made our way to meet Cathy and get her safely to the orphanage. Once she had had her fill of milk Rahuma was a sweet little thing. She sucked her thumb and didn't even fuss as Cara counted her tiny fingers and toes. We sang to her and prayed over her. I told her over and over that she was beautiful and loved. I thanked God that she had been delivered to the police before it was too late for her and that we were headed toward clean clothes and a bed and not feeding tubes at the hospital.

It was beautiful to watch Cara love on her. Cara repeatedly listed her credentials as a mommy. "I held baby Jack in the hospital and I have given Charlotte bottles before. I know how to hold a baby Mommy, look I have her head." It was a long car ride but we barely noticed as we fussed over Rahuma.

I don't think any other adoptive families have had the experience of finding and bringing in a child to the orphanage. We are so thankful for this first hand view of what it must have been like for Isaac to find his way to Ken and Cathy. What an incredible blessing to get to be God's hands and feet. He sees us all, even tiny one month old babies that can't beg for help. He hears our cries and sends what we need.

It is a day none of us will forget.
